See It Clean It - Coastal Conservation Campaign

Help Us Keep Our Coast Beautiful

Adoptees of local beaches and parks make their own schedules and report data to Friends of A1A.  We collaborate with other organizations for large beach cleanups. Look for the latest beach cleanup announcements throughout the year. Bring your energy, eagle eyes and community spirit and join the team! We supply the water, bags, grabbers, gloves and smiling faces :) We generally meet early at 8 am and work until 11 am to beat the heat....come anytime to lend a helping hand.

How it began....

Friends of A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Highway is working in partnership with the Town of Marineland to engage communities, municipalities and civic associations along the A1A coastal corridor in a litter control campaign. This project was made possible from a grant received from the Florida Coastal Management Program through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Specifically, the non-profit used FCMP funds to conduct beach clean-ups; provide tools and supplies for mini-projects (rakes, trash cans and mutt mitts); conduct a coastal needs assessment; conduct group presentations on how to conserve the scenic and natural qualities of the Byway; and create and distribute brochures, flyers and news releases on the negative impacts of litter on coastal areas.

The project also allowed for the byway community to develop an environmental educational fair to further share coastal conservation strategies with like-minded organizations and citizens. The project relies greatly on community volunteers for regular cleanups and projects.

Outcomes: The A1A Byway Coastal Conservation Campaign will continue to

· promote awareness of litter as a negative experience for Byway travelers;

· encourage beach cleanups per month for targeted coastal areas;

· educate residents in conservation strategies by conducting volunteer coastal assessments on potential restoration areas, invasive species and hazardous coastal conditions; and

· perform mini-projects to improve coastal habitats.
