Friends of A1A
From Jacksonville at the Duval County line on the Northeast coast of Florida, and traversing southerly thru both St. Johns and Flagler counties lies an almost unparalleled real life experience.
Filled with breathtaking scenic vistas, beautiful parks and preserves, archaeological sites, historic forts and buildings, magnificent waterways, unique museums, splendid architecture, and almost limitless beaches, this is the seventy-two mile long … A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway.
Did you know that A1A is …
* 72 miles in length, covering both St. Johns and Flagler counties * One of just 126 National Scenic Byways * One of only three such Byways in Florida * Contains more than 4 state parks, 6 local parks and preserves, and 6 nationally acclaimed historic sites * Covers 13 municipalities
How can I help ?
Friends of A1A seeks persons who have a strong desire to maintain the unique character of the area in the immediate vicinity of the Byway.
We are in the process of identifying problems along our beautiful Byway and taking action to alleviate these problems as they come to our attention.
In the past we have worked with citizens who have noticed unsightly areas and we have worked with government entities and civic groups to return such areas to their previous pristine condition.
We realize that we cannot depend solely upon the good offices of our municipal representatives and their staffs. There is just too much to do along our 72 mile-long Byway, and too few resources to cope.
It is an initial goal of the Friends of A1A to implement a group of volunteers who will continually observe conditions in the respective areas with which they are most familiar. That may be in your immediate neighborhood, nearby your workplace, or an area which you frequent for recreation such as a park, or for intellectual and/or historic immersion such as a museum.
If this sounds exciting, then you are someone who can help.
Of course we will need additional persons who are willing to take action, along with our volunteer coordinator, to address these problems. That may be picking up trash in an organized effort, maintaining records of volunteer activity for your local group, making calls to other volunteers in communications efforts, or a multitude of other tasks, some of which we may not yet have even defined.
Local groups of volunteers have a unique opportunity to monitor municipal and business activities in their area of interest and to interact with community and civic leaders relating to maintaining the historic, natural, scenic, architectural, and cultural integrity of the A1A Byway.
And of course as we are dependent upon financial assistance and grants for our projects, tax-deductible contributions are also welcome.
So there are numerous ways to help. You may have some ideas of your own, and we feel there is additional strength in open discussion. We welcome that.
Finally, we ask that you join with us in these efforts. Please take a moment to provide us with your contact information and interests. This will help us determine how best to utilize your interests and skills.
