Coastal Sunsets & More!
From sunrise to sunset a drive along the A1A Ocean Shore Scenic Highway takes you back to the idyllic “Old Florida” feeling of calmness, serenity, safety, and oneness with nature in a town setting. The ride provides you with the opportunity to observe the many activities associated with the ocean and beachside community. You will enjoy an unobstructed view of the ocean for approximately 6 miles. Along the beach you may observe fishermen, swimmers, surfers, joggers, beachcombers as well as birds, schools of fish, and the natural beauty of the ocean. Look for the St. Augustine Lighthouse, a historic and impressive beacon.
A1A is an historical coastal highway traveling through a nationally recognized ecosystem. This river-to-sea corridor combines the changeable beauty of the Atlantic Ocean and beaches with peacefully relaxing vistas of the Matanzas River estuary (also known as Matanzas Inlet). It is a soothing, rejuvenating experience down a road to “Old Florida.”
Walk through preserves surrounded by giant moss-laden oaks or stand on a dune and experience the ever-changing ocean—sometimes, calm and peaceful; other times, turbulent and threatening. The beaches have sand and ocean, but some are white and sandy, some have tidal pools formed by coquina rock outcroppings, while others are pink, “soft” sandy beaches. The forests may be short and windswept coastal scrub or tall majestic oak, hickory, and magnolia trees.
Watch an osprey successfully catch a fish and fly back to its nest. Watch spy pelicans and seagulls as they dive into schools of baitfish. See roseate spoonbills, wood storks, eagles, and tri-colored herons. Experience the silent approach of a manatee and her calf or a school of dolphin with their young moving along the river. Enjoy the watery world that surrounds the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Highway.
