Environmental Education Fair

A fun and interesting way to involve families in coastal conservation and stewardship.  A day filled with activiites, results of the aerial art cleanup and more...

        
The River to Sea Preserve contains wide trails, a large pond with turtles and alligators, a grassy area, access to the Intracoastal (Matanzas River) via trails, canoe and kayak ramps, and access to the ocean across the street. Exhibits will be nature-based and intergenerational.  Activities and games can be intergenerational or for children only.

Nature walks:

plants; birds; beach; flying insects (butterflies and dragonflies); enchanted woods; wildflowers

Waterway adventures:  

canoes; kayaks; river boats

Entertainment:

environmental folk singers; adventuresome pirates

Demonstrated or actual activities:

self-guided backyard activities

beach cleanups

photo shoots

native tree planting

clearing trails

removing invasive plants

building bird houses; bat boxes; butterfly shelters; bird feeders

planting seeds – flower; vegetable; melon; gourd; carrot tops; potatoes

leaf rubbing

2nd Annual Environmental Education Fair

  

Friday - May 20, 2011                          10 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Friday      
Invitation to Selected Schools          Free Admission

 Kid’s Ocean Day will be hosted by Friends of A1A. Two hundred  4th graders from area schools will experience Ocean Literacy lessons up close with a field trip of memorable proportions. The day will begin with buses arriving at River to Sea Preserve East along the boardwalk where interesting learning stations will be positioned. During the three hour excursion, elementary students will learn about litter abatement, the value of ocean habitats and other conservation activities consistent with Florida School standards.

An Evening by the Ocean at Whitney Labs will be hosted by Friends of A1A. The general public and specifically home school students are invited to attend an evening lecture by renowned author and publisher, Frank Gromling. Topic of his talk is “Giving Nature a Hand. “  He will be The event will be in the Lohman Auditorium at the University of Florida Whitney Labs. Gromling explain the needs of Ocean Conservancy and how better to preserve our precious coastal resources. An hour before the lecture the public may view the area’s best science projects and tour the touch tanks at the Lab. After the lecture, a gathering of area environmental authors will be available for book signing. 

 

Out of town guests are encouraged stay the evening at area lodging at discount rates to visit the hidden treasures along the A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway. Enjoy the Friday evening lecture and Saturday fair activities.  The event signature aerial art may feature you as the star!

Friends of A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway is hosting the 2nd Annual Environmental Education Fair to increase awareness of coastal conservation needs along the nationally designated scenic Byway.  Area businesses and sponsors along with the Flagler County Chamber and Tourist Development Council wish to promote community stewardship and increase eco-tourism in our area.

 

The event will be held at River to Sea Preserve West in the Town of Marineland on May 21, 2011 and open to the general public at no cost. The event will feature interactive educational exhibits, activities, family fun for all attendees. The park will serve as the learning lab for interesting experiences. Speakers, music and more entertainment will fill the day.
